Properly securing the cages to the pilings of the pier may seem elementary but is very important. It is no fun to lose cages of oysters that you have nurtured for months. Depending on your location, you may have to deal with strong winds and/or currents. Lines rubbing against pilings covered with barnacles will not last long. Tying and untying knots can be difficult particularly in the colder months. This system works well. It eliminates knots and the cages stay secure. There are “O” rings and snap hooks, nylon shock cord, bungee and stainless screw eyes, 4 on each cage. Other gardeners do it differently. The important thing is to give special thoughts to how you will secure your oyster cages.
